Additional Makers
Edward Arthur Williams (1824-1898)
Description
The Waitotara River with military camps on both sides, smoke rising from the larger camp set low on the right bank and from the township or Maori kainga on the left bank. A group of soldiers is patrolling in the foreground. A few tents are also pitched high on the hill to the left, the site of the Weraroa Pa, although the Pa cannot be seen in this view
Probably copied by Hamley from a drawing of his superior officer, E. A. Williams, although the original has not been traced. Different views of Waitotara by Williams are dated February 1865 and '[Album of an officer]. Waitotara', a drawing by another hand at A-277-023 is dated 25 May 1865, suggesting 1865 as the date for this watercolour copy by Hamley
