Description

It is likely that this detailed pencil drawing was made by George Henry Hutton, although it is unsigned. The Hutton Collection contains several drawings of this abbey. The thirteenth-century ruins of Inchaffray Abbey are situated six miles east of Crieff, in what is now the region of Perth and Kinross. The name is derived from the Gaelic, 'Innisabh-reidh', which means 'island of the smooth water'. This is because originally the abbey stood on an island in the centre of a lake which was famous for its eels. The lake has long-since dried up.
