Description

This view shows is of the south wall of the church and the adjacent houses. It is though to have been drawn in 1811 but there is no artist’s name attached. Portpatrick lies opposite Donaghdee in Ireland, which is only 2 miles away and the gulf stream from the Irish Channel results in the areas mild climate. The town itself lies at the bottom of a cleft in the hills and provides easy access to Stranraer and Galloway. These factors meant that Portpatrick enjoyed a busy harbour industry, with fishing, freight, mail packets, coastguards and lifeboats all operating from its shore. It also provided an enjoyable holiday resort for Victorians to relax in during their leisure time.
