In the days when it was used as a fur trade route, it was not even designated as a single river throughout its length: the name, Hayes, applied only to the sixty miles below where the present Gods River flows in. From here upstream to the junction with the Fox River, it used to be the Steel River; and the steep portion between Knee Lake and the Fox junction was known appropriately as the Hill River. Between Knee Lake and Oxford Lake, the Hayes used to be known as the Trout River. Finally, to add to this confusing early catalogue of names, Weepinipanish and Franklin's River were sometimes applied to the portion above Oxford Lake. The Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names has sensibly adopted the single name, Hayes, for the whole river. see: http://parkscanadahistory.com/publications/fur-trade-canoe-routes.pdf
