Description

A watercolour of the main west door to Arbroath Abbey, Angus, this painting shows the portcullises, west entrance door of Arbroath Abbey and is dated '19 June 1790'. Abberbrothick (or Aberbrothock) is the original name of Arbroath. During the abbey's heyday, a great circular stained glass window – with a diameter of 28 feet - was located above this entrance door. Sadly, the four entrance towers are now little more than ruins.
