Titian Ramsay Peale accompanied Stephen Harriman Long on his expeditions to the American west in 1819-1820. Long's team of topographical engineers and scientists left St Louis, Missouri, in June 1819, on the steamboat 'Western Engineer' and travelled up the Missouri River to Nebraska. Another study from this collection of a 'Pocket Gopher' is located to Arrow Rock, Missouri and dated a week before this one (21 July 1819).
