Description

In this drawing of the south view of Blantyre Priory, Lanarkshire, The priory is in the centre of a thicket, which conveys the beauty of the setting. This is one of four drawings of Blantyre. Together they make a comprehensive record of the buildings and landscape at the turn of the eighteenth century. There are very little structural remains of the priory now left and so it is difficult to reconstruct the architecture of the site. However, it would have been extensive, incorporating both enclosed ecclesiastical buildings and space for lay interaction. The buildings were of fine-grained red sandstone and there were herbal and contemplative gardens. Although difficult to prove, perhaps Marie de Coucy brought masons from her home chateau in France to work on the priory and the castle.
