Description

This sheet, dated September 6th 1815, is unsigned by the artist, but it is quite likely that this is one of Hutton's own drawings. A note below the title gives approximate dimensions of the remains: 'External length about 30 paces - Breadth, 9'. This is the only drawing or sketch from Spittal contained in the Hutton Collection. The ruined hospital and chapel of St Magnus lies on the western slopes of Spittal Hill, about 3 miles south-south-east of the town of Halkirk in Caithness. The building is reputed to date from the twelfth century, and its grounds were the burial place of the Clan Gunn until the early twentieth century. St Magnus was the Earl of half of Orkney, killed by his cousin, and fellow earl, Haakon Paulson, in about AD 1116 or 1117. Magnus is the patron saint of Caithness, Orkney and Shetland.
