Watercolour illustration commissioned by William Roxburgh. ROX1429.
In his 'Flora Indica', Roxburgh describes this species as a large timber tree, native of the mountainous parts of Coromandel, Bundelkhund, etc. It flowers in March and April, and ripens its seed around the end of the year. Roxburgh also writes: 'Fom the researches of Mr. Colebrooke, above quoted, in the 11th Vol. of the Asiatic Researches it appears that the 'oblibanum' or Frankincense of the ancients is the produce of this tree, and not of 'Juniperus lycia', as hitherto thought.'
