Description
This drawing is dated 1781, and although it is unsigned, it is likely that the artist was George Henry Hutton himself, and that the picture was drawn in the same period as the drawing of nearby Comrie Castle. This is the only image relating to Garth Castle in the Hutton Collection. The square tower house of Garth Castle stands in the Strath of Appin, in north-west Perthshire. Dating from the fourteenth century, the castle was a stronghold of the Royal Stewart family, and may be by Alexander Stewart, Lord of Buchan (1343-c.1406). Stewart, more famously known as the 'Wolf of Badenoch', was the younger son of King Robert II of Scotland, and became notorious for his lawless behaviour, which included burning the towns of Forres and Elgin.
