Inscribed on preceding page: "Tower of Goliath Church of St Esprit and the Hospital at Berne, Oct 11th".
This is a page from a sketchbook referred to as the 'Red Album'. One sketch depicts the Christoffelturm in Bern which was demolished in the 1865 - therefore the sketches are thought to date from before 1865. Contains sketches of Switzerland, France and England.

TWW Comment

The Christoffelturm, one of three medieval guard towers in Bern, was demolished in spring 1865. The motion to destroy it was only narrowly passed in a referendum with 415 voting in favour and 411 against. The site is now occupied by Bern station.
