Description

Payne worked as an engineer in Plymouth before moving to London in 1790, to pursue landscape painting. Here, his innate interest in man-made structures combines with a Picturesque understanding of landscape absorbed from William Gilpin, applied to a subject found in his native Devon, near the town of Tavistock.
