The church was founded in 1874 as an extension of St Peter's parish, and was built in 1876. A bell tower and baptistry was added in 1888. The church and surrounding buildings were demolished in the early 1960s to make way for the present church and hall. (https://natlib.govt.nz/records/22362489)
