Signed with monogram and dated 1911 l.r., watercolour over pencil heightened with bodycolour and scratching out
The bridge was the site of a battle in the early years of the Wars of the Roses on 12th October 1459 which saw Richard of York abandoning his wife and three children, who were apparently standing by Ludlow Market Cross when the Lancastrians arrived in the town.
Harry Goodwin was an elder brother of Albert Goodwin, with whom he visited the Italian Lakes and Switzerland in 1887. His style is similar to that of his younger brother and he exhibited from 1867. Examples of his work can be found in the Ashmolean, Maidstone Museum, and Manchester City Art Gallery.
