Description

An oval-format watercolour depicting 'Amphitrite' from her port side by Henry Hand inscribed: "H.M.S. Amphitrite in the Ice. Sea of Ochotska. Lat. 53o 50'.n. Lony 142o OO'.E." A descendant from one of the men on board the ship supplied the following obituary note, cited in the ‘Aberystwyth Newspaper’ 1 February 1907: 'Polar Expedition, sent in search of Sir John Franklin in 1848-9; and silver medal granted in 1850. In this expedition deceased served on board H.M.S. "Amphitrite," which, in company with the Herald and brig Clover, sailed round Cape Horn, up the Pacific, and through the Behring Straits and performed a seventy-three days' march over the snow, depositing stores of food, etc., en route. This extraordinary service in the polar regions was performed by a ship's crew sent straight from the tropical regions of the West Coast of Africa where it had been stationed in suppressing the slave trade.
