Description

There is no artist’s name attached to this sketch, which shows much of the architectural detail. There are three drawings of this Nunnery to be found amongst the Hutton Drawings. Manuel Nunnery was founded in 1156, as a Cistercian House, by Malcolm IV. The Cistercian Order was concerned with the contemplation and worshipping of God. As a result many of their houses were built in beautiful but relatively secluded spots. Manuel’s situation, on the banks of the River Avon, was therefore ideal. They were also renowned for their clean, soaring architectural style – a reflection of God’s omnipotence. This is clearly highlighted in the detail included in this sketch.
