Description

This unfinished watercolour is based on pencil and ink sketches from the Bristol and Malmesbury Sketchbook, made during his tour of the West Country in 1791. The refinement of colouring and delicacy of outline shows the first apparent influence of Edward Dayes. The Abbey, which Turner revisited in 1798, was to become a subject for his Picturesque Views in England and Wales, published between 1827 and 1838.
