Description

Opaque watercolour painting on European paper of a ‘Cholli Brahmin’ and his wife. This Vaishnava Brahmin, wearing large earrings, a dhoti and angavastra (shawl), stands with a palm-leaf manuscript in his left hand. He wears a cropped beard and a moustache and his hair is tied in a kudumi (knot of hair) at the back of his head. Vaishnava namams (emblems) adorn his forehead, throat, neck, arms and chest. His wife, wearing a nine-yard sari covering her bare chest, stands near him carrying their child. She wears numerous items of jewellery.
