Description

Pen and grey ink and watercolour. This is a view of Oxford from the south with the tower of Magdalen College and Magdalen Bridge beyond. Magdalen Bridge is shown here newly completed replacing the old stone bridge dating from the sixteenth century which collapsed in a flood in February 1772. The new bridge was started in 1772 but not fully completed until 1790, the year after the present watercolour was drawn.
