Description

This untitled drawing shows the ruins of St Duthac's Chapel in Tain. Although the Hutton Collection contains at least ten drawings relating to St Duthac's Collegiate Church, this is the only drawing in the collection that solely depicts St Duthac's Chapel, an older building on a separate site. The drawing is not dated and not signed by the artist, and it is likely that it was the work of George Henry Hutton himself. The ruins of St Duthac's Chapel sit on a grassy knoll overlooking the Dornoch Firth in the north-east part of the burgh of Tain. The chapel is believed to have been built to house the relics of St Duthac or Duthus, which were returned to his home town of Tain from Ireland around 1253. The saint's relics were later moved to St Duthac's Collegiate Church, built a century after the chapel, in the centre of Tain.
