Description

In this lively view of the Pump Room, ranks of sedan chairs await their passengers. Sedan chairs, just like modern taxis, were only permitted to stand at set points in the city. The sedan chair service was controlled by the Corporation (Council). By the time this was produced, there were over 200 sedan chairs licensed in Bath. The building visible at the right of the picture, behind the colonnade, is the White Hart Inn. This was one of the city’s major hotels. It was a venue for meetings and balls, and a departure point for coaches to many places including Southampton and Birmingham. It was demolished in 1869.
