Description

Gainsborough applied his monogram, seen here at lower rigtht, to several drawings made during his Bath period (1759–74) before giving them as gifts. A layer of varnish makes the image resemble an oil sketch. Medium: black chalk, pen and black ink, blue and brown washes, heightened with white gouache.
