Description

Interior view of a chapel. Six Maori girls sit on the left, in blue uniforms. Two women, also in blue and with their faces obscured by their bonnets, sit next to a man dressed in grey on the right. The minister stands centre, and a woman sits with her back to the viewer to the left of him. Hutton describes the scene: 'New Zealand church architecture nos 1 + 2. The Chapel of Ease at the Kerikeri (inside and out). The colours are not fictitious but realities - a rather graceful combination. Mr Cotton is walking up to the reading desk which is placed behind the communion table - on the right are the two Miss Kemps & their brother. Children of the Catechism on the left are some native girls who constitute Mrs Kemp's school. The outside of the chapel has a most original feature namely the green verandah - no improvement in my opinion.'

The missionaries' first little combined chapel and school was built near the water and dedicated on 19 April 1824. It was replaced in 1829 when a 38-by-18-foot (11.6-by-5.5-metre) lath and plaster structure was erected on the present site of St James (Wikipedia)
