Description

Under the title of this watercolour, there is a note that appears to have read 'as it stood in 1806'. The artist's surname is Turnbull, and this is one of at least two views of Peebles Cross Church in the Hutton Collection painted by this artist. Standing on an elevated position on the west bank of the Eddleston Water, you can still see the remains of Peebles Cross Church today, although much of what was once there has disappeared. A Trinitarian monastery was an addition to the thirteenth-century church in 1473-4, but fell into disuse after the Reformation in 1560. The Monastery became building stone, while the church was temporarily the parish church of Peebles. When a new parish church opened in 1784, the Cross Church fell into complete ruin.
