Description

Lieutenant James George was part of Governor-General Lord Minto’s British expedition to the region in early 19th century. Gunung Ledang (Mount Ophir) is a significant cultural reference in the history of this region. Chinese traders in the 14th century referred to it as Kim Sua or Golden Mountain, according to ancient myths that it was a rich gold site. During the Majapahit Empire, it received its current name Gunung Ledang which means 'mountain from afar'. The 15th century Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) references the mountain in Legenda Puteri Gunung Ledang (Legend of the Princess of Mount Ophir). This mountain was historically used as a navigational marker as it visible from a distance. Medium: Watercolour on paper
