On 5 February 1783 a major earthquake struck southern Italy and Sicily with an estimated magnitude of 7.0. It caused widespread damage and triggered a tsunami that hit Messina, destroying the harbour walls and many nearby buildings. Further quakes followed on 6 and 7 February, and at the beginning and end of March. Between 31,000 and 50,000 people are thought to have died.
