Description
Watercolour of the chancel of St Mary's Chapel, St Ronan's Nunnery, Iona, Argyllshire, 'from a drawing made on the spot by Capt. E.H. Columbine, R.N., 1792'. This view of the ruined interior of St Mary's Church is facing to the north-west. The chancel was the area of the church, where the clergy and choir sat during services. It is located between the high altar and the nave, where the rest of the congregation sit. The community, when founded in the thirteenth century, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the first generation of Canonesses was mainly of Irish origin. The ruins, depicted here before a minor clean up operation managed by the Duke of Argyll in 1849, are the best-preserved remains in Europe of a female Augustinian community
