Description

Venice has been on the tourist circuit since the 16th century, and here huddles of tourists and residents of the city congregate outside the Basilica of St Mark's. Two women are shown swaddling babies, while a group of children in the foreground feed the swarm of pigeons. Allingham captures the glowing colours on the Basilica's façade, and the intricate details of the extraordinary architecture surrounding St Mark's Square.Arthur Grogan commented on his acquisition: 'Helen Allingham was only once in Venice, about 1900. I first saw it [this watercolour] in Bonham's, but I couldn't afford it. The Fine Art Society then bought it, and I bought it from them. It hadn't sold as it didn't have a kitten or a small child in it'.
