Description

View of the ruins of Durham Bridge, destroyed in the great flood in Nov. 1771. The great sand bank on the right was till then the deepest water at that place. This watercolour is one of 80 pasted together into a bound volume - Volume Record Number 03396.

TWW Comment

This is likely to be Prebends Bridge. Both Prebends and Elvert Bridges were washed away in the 1771 floods but Elvert Bridge had several buildings on it. Most of these buildings had fallen off the bridge in the 1750s but the bridge in this picture looks too small to have had shops and trade buildings on it. Also the trees to the left suggest this is the incised meander at Durham, which also points to Prebends Bridge.
