Description

This sketch dates from August 1802, but is unsigned. It shows the church and tower of Kilmun nestling on the shores of the Holy Loch, and features people strolling by the loch and boats close to shore. It is one of several drawings and sketches of Kilmun in the Hutton Collection. The distinctive square tower in Kilmun is the remaining part of a collegiate church founded in 1442 by Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochawe, chief of the Clan Campbell and an ancestor of the Dukes of Argyll. The churchyard in Kilmun has been the burial place of the Campbells of Argyll since then. Although the village became a ‘burgh of barony’ in 1490, it did not develop significantly because of the limitations on land-space imposed by the steep hills behind the village.
