Description

Records indicates that a 244 ton brigantine "Wolfville" 108x26x11 was built at Oak Point [Kingsport] Cornwallis township, launched 15 Oct. 1867, registered at Windsor N.S. on 31 Oct. The builder was Isaac Bigelow a ship builder of Kingsport who held 4 shares. The managing owners were George Forsythe and John Rounsefell, Merchants of Wolfville with 16 shares each (joint). Benjamin Bigelow of Kingsport held 4 shares and George Harvie a farmer of Horton held 16 shares and David Hawkins of London England 8 shares. The vessel was sold to Liverpool NS in 1871, registry transferred. The donor of this painting lived in the house currently known as the Blomidon Inn. According to the donor's family The Wolfville was "built" by David Harris (great grandfather of W. C. B. Harris) at the Wolfville shipyards situated at the east end of the present harbour. The painting was probably sketched in pen an ink and coloured afterward. Every seaport had an artist who would sketch ships in the harbour.The Lighthouse illustrated in the picture, the Cordouan tower lighthouse is a famous monument built on a small rocky islet off the western coast of France near Bourdeaux at the mouth of the Gironde River. It was one of the first two French monuments to be classified a Historic Monument in 1862 together with Notre Dame de Paris.
