Back accompanied John Franklin on the Coppermine Expedition of 1821 in an effort to chart the area from Hudson Bay to Canada's north coast. The group turned back at Point Turnagain, having mapped about 500 miles of coastline, but were forced to divert from their planned return route due to harsh weather. In the following weeks the party lost 11 of the 21 men on the expedition.
