Description

Sketch of remains of St Fillan's Priory, Strathfillan, Perthshire. It is dated September 8th 1820, and although not signed, is likely to be the work of George Henry Hutton himself. This is one of four views of Strathfillan in the Hutton Collection. The area takes its name from St Fillan, who is reputed to have founded the priory there in the eighth century. A note beneath the title of this sketch reads: 'The little wall on the left, below the Ruins, is modern, & contains the monument of a man who was drowned in 1808 when bathing in the adjacent River Fill'. Another note identifies the Kirk, or church, in the right foreground of the sketch.
