Description

Although we cannot be certain, it is likely that this scene is based in the coffee house in Orange Grove. This was the most fashionable of Bath’s coffee houses, but was demolished in the 19th century along with other buildings close to the Abbey. People had to pay a subscription to use coffee houses. They were select institutions where the wealthy and fashionable would relax, socialise and gossip. Free newspapers and writing materials were provided, and alcohol, hot drinks and snacks were for sale.
