Description

This damaged drawing shows the ruins of Balmerino Abbey, which is located on the south bank of the River Tay, opposite the western edge of Dundee. The drawing is entitled 'Part of Balmerino [missing text]', and dates from around 1781. It is one of several drawings of the Abbey in the Hutton Collection. This drawing appeared in volume I of Captain Francis Grose's book, 'The Antiquities of Scotland', which was published in 1791. The human figures included in this drawing provide the viewer with a sense of proportion regarding the ruined abbey's size. Lady Ermengarde, the widow of William the Lyon, founded Balmerino Abbey in 1229 for a group of Cistercian monks. The Abbey was dedicated to the memory of the Blessed Virgin and Lady Ermengarde's relative, King Edward the Confessor. The Abbey was a victim of the widespread destruction of Scottish churches that took place during the Reformation period.
