Description

This drawing is dated June 1790, and may be the work of Francis Grose, an author, antiquary and artist who was responsible for a number of drawings in the Hutton Collection. There are no annotations on the page to suggest what the monument might represent, or whom it might commemorate. 'Hunting Tower', or Huntingtower Castle, is the modern name for Ruthven Castle, the country seat of the Ruthven family, who held the Earldom of Gowrie until their titles and lands were forfeited by James VI in the early seventeenth century. The castle passed to the ownership of the crown and was renamed Huntingtower. The restored castle is today a well-known landmark on the western outskirts of Perth.
