Description

Purchased at the Murrietta Sale in 1892 (see no. 38) for 280 guineas, this work does not appear to have been exhibited at the Old Watercolour Society. In 1841, Cox had left London and returned to the city of his birth; Harborne, now a suburb of Birmingham, was in Cox's day a village on its outskirts, and retained many rural features. A reviewer wrote of Cox in 1854 :- "Mr. Cox deserves to appropriate the Homeric epithet of Zeus -- "cloud-compelling" --somehow he gets the wind into his pictures like no other man"; it was this inherent movement in his late watercolours that Cox's followers tried so hard to emulate.
