Description

Watercolour painting on paper of the Buland Darwaza or 'Gate of Magnificence' at Fatehpur Sikri. The gateway, set into the south wall of the main mosque, was built, along with the rest of the city, by the Mughal Emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605). The gateway has three arched entrances, the largest, commonly referred to as the Horseshoe gate, is shown at the front of the building. Stairs lead up to the Buland Darwaza and surrounding the arches the red sandstone façade is decorated with white marble in-lay and inscriptions. The roof of the gateway is decorated with red sandstone turrets and white domes. Behind the gateway is the defensive wall of the city. The painting is surrounded by a black border.
