Description
Ancient Church of St. Helena; overgrown ruins with central arch and three figures on top, two men with a gun at left foreground. Pen and grey ink, and watercolour.
Curator's comments:
Listed in the Percy sale catalogue only as by 'Préaux'. Entered in the Register as by Edmond Préaux, but much more probably by Michel François Préaulx.
Mr M.J. Stanley (5/9/2008) has plausibly suggested that the drawing may depict the ruins of the church at Saffuriya (the crusader church of St Anne at Sepphoris) between Acre and Nazareth (for images of the church see Denys Pringle, "Churches of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, a Corpus", vol.II, Cambridge, 1998, pp.212-6, and J. Folda, "The Crusader Period and the Church of Saint Anne at Sepphoris,” in "Sepphoris in Galilee: Crosscurrents of Culture", Rebecca M. Nagy, et al., eds., North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, 1996, pp. 101-107).
