Description

Watercolour over pencil. This is a view of the town of Beaumaris from the south-west. Beaumaris Castle is hidden by the small hill beyond the town. The hills of the mainland of Wales are visible beyond with Great Orme's Head on the far horizon. Puffin Island is visible through the trees to the left. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Beaumaris was the most important port in Wales and was infamous for its pirates. Goods such as tobacco from Maryland and sugar and spices from the Caribbean arrived here.
