Inscribed in orange watercolour, l.l.: Owen Staples Niagara / '1911'. ; In pencil, vso u.c.: The James ["James" stroked out] Butler's Residence / built before 1812. / occupied by-Nelson Bissell. / says his uncle saw this house / on the day of the battle of / Queenston Heights
The house was probably built by Johnson Butler, a magistrate, about 1817. JRR(1912) 92
