Description

Willem Witsen made this watercolour in 1884, his last year as a student at the Amsterdam Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. The young artist was then already a superb watercolourist. He painstakingly drew the fine hairs in front of the dog’s eyes, cleverly taking advantage of the white of the paper. The sitter is a little dog, and an old one judging from its right eye, which shows signs of cataracts.; Willem Witsen maakte deze aquarel in 1884, zijn laatste jaar als student aan de Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. De jonge kunstenaar was toen al een uitmuntend aquarellist. De fijne haartjes voor de ogen van de hond zijn zorgvuldig getekend, waarbij hij handig gebruik maakte van de witte kleur van het papier. De geportretteerde is een hondje op leeftijd, blijkens zijn rechteroog dat tekenen van ouderdomsstaar vertoont.
