Description

Coloured drawing of a north view of Inchmahome Priory, Perthshire. This drawing shows Inchmahome Priory from the north shore of the Lake of Menteith in Perthshire. It is dated 1789 and is one of a number of images relating to Inchmahome Priory in the Hutton Collection. The name of the artist is not recorded on the page, and it is likely that this is one of George Henry Hutton's own works. The Lake of Menteith is in the heart of an area of eastern Lowland Scotland rich in medieval royal palaces and castles, and probably because of this, Inchmahome priory has illustrious royal connections. Robert the Bruce is known to have visited the priory on at least three occasions, and its easily defensible location, on an island in the lake, also made it an ideal refuge for the infant Mary Queen of Scots after the Battle of Pinkie in 1547.
