Description

Here the remains of the castle can be seen halfway up the hill, in the centre of the sketch. The castle still looks much the same and so this image is a good gauge and check of the deterioration process. The castle once comprised a curtain wall 360 metres by 90 metres and four corner towers and the hill has thought to have been a fortified residence since the Saxon age. Roxburgh Castle, also known as Marchmont, was once the property of the crown and then various members of the nobility, most notably the Douglases. As such it played a pivotal role in much of Scotland’s politics and power machinations.
