Description

This sketch shows the north-east view of the abbey from a distance and includes much of the surrounding area. The artist's name and the date have not been provided. There are a number of other drawings in the Hutton Collection that detail Fearn Abbey. Fearn Abbey is thought to have been founded in the thirteenth century by Ferquhard, Earl of Ross. It was home to monks of the Premonstratensian Order, who divided their time between prayer and working the surrounding land. The monks occupied the abbey until the Reformation (1560), after which it was used as the local parish church.
