Description

The dedication on this print explains that it is a drawing of a military encampment, by James Wales, and dedicated to the Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch. It is dated 1782 and is thought to be an incomplete picture. It has been suggested as a result that it is a proof run of the eventual final print. No further information is given either on the sheet or in the Hutton Drawings to explain its purpose in the collection or how it found a home there. The Dukes of Buccleuch and their families were always a formidable political force in Scotland’s power machinations but they are perhaps better remembered as military leaders and organisers. The Duke’s regularly issued broadsides in and around the Edinburgh area, especially, advertising the King’s coin, and the adventures which could be found as a regular soldier.
