Description

This painting shows the ruins of the thirteenth-century Abbey of St Mary of Deer and is one of a series of drawings in the Hutton Collection that show different views of the abbey. An unknown artist dates it 7th March 1796. There is another similar drawing in the Hutton Collection, likely by the same artist, of the same view, dated 1819. Deer Abbey is in Aberdeenshire, about one mile from the village of Old Deer and one and a half miles from Mintlaw in the north-east of Scotland. The monks at Deer were Cistercians, called 'white monks' because of the long white robes they wore. The abbey fell into disrepair when it was abandoned in the seventeenth century.
