Description

This sketch shows the front view of Scone Palace, which is located in the village of Scone, near Perth. Although the name of the artist has not been included on the drawing, it is quite likely to have been George Hutton himself. Overlooking the River Tay and the 'gateway to the Highlands', Scone Palace was originally the capital of Pictavia, and the crowning venue - using the Stone of Destiny - for new Scottish monarchs. As with so many Scottish buildings, the abbey of Scone and the Bishops' Palace were destroyed by a mob in 1559 during the Reformation. A new palace was subsequently built by the Gowrie family in 1580. However, following 'the Gowrie Conspiracy' against James VI of Scotland in 1600, the relieved King gifted the palace to Sir David Murray as a reward for his loyalty.
