Description

Innovations in livestock breeding during the late 18th and early 19th centuries led to artistic commissions from breeders keen to record their successes. Thomas Sidney Cooper, James Ward and Robert Hills were amongst the artists who were most sought after in this field.
Hills’ watercolours of animals are particularly notable for being careful, detailed and highly realistic studies, characterised by a delicate use of colour and line. Between 1795 and 1815, Hills published nearly 800 animal studies for his extensive series Etchings of Quadrupeds.
