Description

This sketch, of St Magnus' Cathedral in Orkney, may be by William Daniell in about 1818. The cruciform shape, rising in levels to the tower is clear in this image. This is one of eight views of the cathedral held in the Hutton Drawings. Daniell, a well-known artist of his day, completed many sketches and drawings of Scottish sites of importance, many of which are now in the Hutton Drawings. He is more famous for his English and Indian landscapes and so these items are a refreshing testament to his skill in representing this countries landscape. How he became involved in adding to Hutton’s Scottish ecclesiastical record, however, is unclear.
